THE DEER BOWL

In the 18th century, social clubs and associations were already widespread in Switzerland. Their members were usually from the local elites that showcased their social status in the form of objects as well. A nice example of this bourgeois self-confidence is a pewter bowl on display in the dining room of the Museum Lindwurm.
A dedication is engraved in the center of the lid, identifying the bowl as a wedding present. On the occasion of his marriage to Carolina Wilhelmina Zahn on March 3, 1794, the Jäger-Companie (Hunters Company) gifted this pewter bowl to their honorary member Johann Heinrich Ambuhl.
There are 12 cartouches surrounding the dedication with the names and professions or official titles of the donors and members of the Jäger-Companie. Among them is Peter Gnehm (1740-1814), one of Jakob and Emma Windler’s great-great-grandfathers. In Stein am Rhein, he held positions as town councilor and chief bailiff, among others.
