POTATO GRATER / BAKED POTATO MASHER
dated 19th century

In the 19th century, potatoes were increasingly used in Swiss kitchens. New recipes for their preparation were developed and new devices for processing them were invented. Potato graters were used to make mashed potatoes.

The depicted model was conceived for use on a table because of its rather small size. The legs and lever consist of especially hard ash wood, the trough of durable beech. The perforated plate on the inside, through which the boiled and peeled potatoes were pressed, is made of tin-plated sheet metal.

Known since ancient times, the technique of tinning was often used in the 19th century to protect metal against corrosion.
